A Review of Results with Propecia after Five Years

Thursday, December 27th, 2007

One of the major claims of Propecia is that “Propecia maintains hair in eighty-three percent of men in a two year clinical trial for those who took one milligram daily.”  Has the level of success been maintained for the past three years? What are the consumer five year results of Propecia?

During the course of the study, some of the male participants took Propecia, while other men took a placebo. A placebo is a pill that does not contain any of the active ingredients of the medication being studied.

In five years, the men who took Propecia had an average of three-hundred more hairs that appeared in a one inch diameter area then those who took the placebo. From this stand point, it looks as if Propecia is a long-term successful treatment that combats hair loss.

Propecia, after five years, was still able to hold its number one title. The results were even more exciting for young men who had just started to notice a few hairs in the sink. Men who would have gone bald were able to keep their full head of hair. This is amazing news for anyone who is currently suffering from hair loss.

The results showed that if you wanted to re-grow hair, you could obtain greater results when Propecia was used in combination with another hair loss treatment, such as Rogaine.  Nonetheless, Propecia is a phenomenal hair loss treatment that can easily stand on its own two feet. Discuss your Propecia options with your doctor today.

A Review of Minoxidil

Wednesday, December 19th, 2007

With 50% of men plagued with the discomfort of hair loss, there are many products available that treat a receding hairline and thinning hair.  Although there are literally hundreds of options available, few work.  However, the ones that do produce results work effectively in not only stopping, but sometimes reversing the process of hair loss.

Minoxidil is a topical treatment that is used to treat hair loss. This hair loss treatment is a liquid that is usually found in a pre-mixed solution.  Rogaine is the perfect example of an effective pre-mixed solution that currently uses Minoxidil.

The Food and Drug Administration has approved consumers to obtain a 2% and 5% prescription of Minoxidil through a propriety company. Both men and women can use this hair loss treatment. Women are more likely to use the higher percentage of Minoxidil solution. Usually, the two percent solution is ineffective in women.

The main ingredient in Minoxidil acts as a stimulant, promoting growth in hair follicles. The 5% topical solution of Minoxidil is the strongest version that has been approved by the FDA, and it can be purchased over-the-counter. If you are just starting to experience hair loss, you may want to try the 2% solution first.

What is In Minoxidil?

Both Rogaine, for men and women, contain Minoxidil as one of the main active ingredients. The solution may also contain 80% alcohol, water, and Propylene Glycol. There are generic and custom solutions that contain different quantities of these main ingredients.

Minoxidil is used to primarily stimulate the regrowth of hair. This treatment does not act as a DHT inhibitor, such as Propecia.  Minoxidil only is responsible for overriding the cause of hair loss, instead of stopping the root cause of hair loss. This is one of the reasons why Minoxidil has not been proven as effective as Propecia. To stop hair loss, one must go to the root of the problem.

What Are The Side Effects of Minoxidil?

The negative side effects of Minoxidil can be reduced by only applying the product two times a day. People have reported that while using Minoxidil, they have experienced inflammation, redness and itching at the application site. These side effects can be counter-acted with a skin smoothing agent, such as Folligen Lotion, Emu Oil, Tricomin and Aloe Vera.

People who have experienced over-absorption of Minoxidil have complained of chest pain, vision changes, and an irregular or fast heartbeat. Also, women who used the 5% version experienced the growth of unwanted facial hair. If you experiencing any of these more severe side effects, it is important to tell your healthcare provider.

Minoxidil is available without a prescription. It can be applied topically and used simultaneously with other hair loss treatments. Before you apply Minoxidil, it is important that your scalp is dry. After you have applied Minoxidil, you cannot shampoo or shower for four hours. It is also not recommended to use a hair dryer while using Minoxidil.

40% of men who used Minoxidil in clinical trials reported the appearance of hair regrowth. Before you start a hair treatment regime, it is crucial to talk with your doctor. Your doctor will be able to tell you which hair treatment solution or medication may work best for you. In clinical trials, Minoxidil worked best when used with a DHT inhibitor, such as Propecia.

Propecia: One Man’s Success Story

Thursday, December 6th, 2007

With all of the recent press about Propecia, many men are wondering if this is the wonder drug their receding hairline and bald spot needs.  Hair loss is a problem that affects over 50% of men. For years, scientists have been trying to create a prescription medication that treats the root cause of hair loss.

Propecia was released onto the market with widespread acclaim and applause. Joining in on the celebration is David Decker, one of Propecia’s many success stories.  Born and raised with a head of full, long hair, David grew increasingly concerned about his harilnie fate when he began losing his hair five years ago.  Slowly but steadily, his hairline began receding, and the hair on the top of his head was continuously thinning.

For David, his concern rested with the genetics of his family, and he was happy that his “hair loss [was] progressing very slowly.”  When he surveyed the room at holidays, he would notice that all of his older male relatives had thinned hair on top.  As a fan of long hair, David was increasingly concerned that his hair loss would become a great problem.  With an inch lost at his temples and thinning on top, David began taking Propecia in order to stop the loss and hopefully reverse it.

Six months later with Propecia, David has contained his hair loss, while experienced the re-growth of his hair.  With his long hair here to stay, Propecia has provided David with the ability to maintain his stylish hair.

Propecia Case Study: Shedding at Month Three

Wednesday, November 14th, 2007

Several of our readers have emailed us inquiring about their progress with Propecia.  Some men have experienced shedding or thinning during the first phase of their treatment with Propecia, and they are worried about whether Propecia is working for them.

Based upon our research and conversations with Propecia users, thinning in month three to five is very normal for Propecia treatment.  For the first three months, some men will experience thinning of the hair, especially around the temples, although the recession of the hairline will be contained.  Some experts believe that the initial thinning is attributed to the scalp’s natural reaction to discard the old hairs to make room for the thicker, newer ones.

The thinning is a normal part of the process that some men initially experience in the first three to five months.  After this first period of three to five months, most men who experience the initial condition will witness that the original hair, as well as new hair, will begin to grow back.  When you take into consideration studies demonstrate that 83% of men experience further hair growth, the numbers are on your side for growing back your thick hair.

For some men using Propecia, it may get worse before it gets better, but in this case, patience pays off with a long-term full head of hair.
